Summary

Board meeting x 6 per year, volunteer activity if possible by arrangement.

Detailed description

FOPP currently has approx.30 volunteers placed in the prison’s Education Department, Library, Visitors Centre and Visits Halls. Other activities and opportunities exist depending on volunteer experience and interests. All FOPP personnel are security checked and recruitment, training and annual review systems are in place. The volunteers are recruited and supported by a paid volunteer coordinator with board members joining her to help undertake the annual reviews. A training programme is in place which includes opportunities to socialise and develop a team approach. Volunteers run a refreshment facility in the Visitors Centre, as many visitors have travelled some distance and many also appreciate the chance to ask questions about what to expect on their visit and to meet a friendly face.

Board members meet bi-monthly to manage all this activity and take on various individual roles as they feel able. It is an interesting and ever-changing role as the prison develops.

Board members are also peer reviewed annually.

Experience of meetings and small voluntary organisations useful.

Ability to communicate with a wide range of people.

Interest in the support of prisoners and their families.

About Friends of Peterborough Prison

Although run as a Not-for-Profit organisation, Friends Of Peterborough Prison (FOPP) is not a charity but is a company limited by guarantee. It is run by a board of directors, one of whom is designated as chair. The directors are all unpaid volunteers and are, or have been, FOPP volunteers in the prison or Tea-Bar.
