About Manea Parish Council

The Manea Community Fishing Lake and Orchard commonly known as Manea Pit, is a cherished natural area located off Park Road in the centre of Manea village. This former gravel pit has been transformed into a multifaceted community space that offers a variety of recreational activities and supports local wildlife. The lake is well-regarded for its fishing opportunities, attracting anglers of all ages. It is stocked with a variety of coarse fish species but predominantly carp, providing an enjoyable experience for both novice and experienced fishermen. Day fishing tickets are available for purchase from the village shop. Adjacent to the lake is the community orchard, home to numerous mature fruit trees. Visitors are encouraged to explore the orchard and enjoy its seasonal fruits. The orchard not only provides fresh produce but also serves as a peaceful spot for relaxation and community gatherings. Efforts to develop and grow the Manea Community Orchard Group are ongoing, with local residents invited to participate in its stewardship. The area surrounding Manea Lake and Community Orchard is rich in biodiversity, hosting a wide range of species, including mammals, insects, plants, trees, and shrubs. It’s a popular spot for dog walkers, ramblers, and families. Picnic benches are strategically placed in the orchard making it an ideal location for outdoor meals and relaxation. To protect the local wildlife and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors, Manea Parish Council requires that all dogs be kept on leads at all times within the fishing lake, orchard, and wildlife area. This policy helps minimize disturbances to wildlife and maintains a welcoming environment for everyone. Manea Lake is accessible via footpaths leading from various points in the village. A walking and cycling map of Manea, highlighting routes to the lake and other local attractions, is available through the Fenland District Council. The site is equipped with well-maintained facilities, and offers free parking. Manea Community Fishing Lake and Orchard exemplifies community-driven environmental stewardship, providing a serene and versatile space for recreation, conservation, and community engagement. To encourage avian and bat populations, Manea Parish Council has installed several bird and bat boxes including an owl box. These artificial nesting sites offer safe breeding and roosting spaces, contributing to the conservation of these species. The boxes are strategically placed to maximize occupancy and are monitored regularly to assess their usage. Volunteers engage in habitat management, species monitoring, and educational outreach, fostering a strong sense of community stewardship.

We really need more volunteers to help maintain and develop this wonderful area.
