Grounds, Gardening, Biodiversity & Site Volunteers support the care, maintenance and long-term development of Wysing’s buildings and landscape
Wysing Arts Centre is a contemporary arts organisation based in rural Cambridgeshire. Set within 11 acres of fields, woodlands and natural habitats, Wysing’s site plays a central role in our programme, supporting ecological initiatives, while hosting young people, local communities, and artists from across the world.Following the completion of Wysing’s capital project that sees environmental sustainability and biodiversity embedded across our site, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of Wysing’s next chapter.Role summary
Grounds, Gardening, Biodiversity & Site Volunteers support the care, maintenance and long-term development of Wysing’s buildings and landscape. Giving a couple of hours a week, volunteers contribute to a five-year vision to enhance biodiversity while also helping with practical tasks that keep the site safe, functional and welcoming for artists, audiences and participants.
What’s involved?
- Assisting with general groundskeeping and garden maintenance
- Supporting biodiversity initiatives such as rewilding and habitat creation
- Tree planting, bed preparation and seasonal land-based work
- Helping with species identification and ecological monitoring
- Supporting foraging and nature-based activities
- Carrying out small maintenance and practical tasks across buildings and outdoor spaces
- Helping support the smooth day-to-day running of the site
- Working alongside staff and other volunteers as part of a small team
- Following health and safety guidance while carrying out tasks
We want all our volunteers to feel welcome and supported. Volunteers will:
- Receive induction, guidance and any necessary training
- Be provided with tools and equipment to carry out tasks safely
- Have opportunities to learn about ecology, land care and Wysing’s creative programme
- Be part of a friendly and collaborative team
This role will suit you if you are:
- Someone who enjoys hands-on, practical work indoors and outdoors
- Interested in gardening, ecology, conservation or site care
- Practical, reliable and enjoy problem-solving
- Happy to work independently or as part of a team
- Able to contribute a couple of hours on a regular basis
- Interested in the connection between landscape, environment and creative practice

Access information
- Wysing is located in rural Cambridgeshire and is set on an 11-acre natural landscape. We have several buildings across the site where our recent project has improved pathways to enable more people to enjoy our natural surroundings, but many green spaces and older pathways are uneven.
- There are 22 parking spaces, and an additional eight accessible parking spaces. All buildings are located close to accessible parking spaces.
- We have accessible toilet facilities and a gender-neutral toilet in our reception
- There is step free access to our reception area, which has an induction loop and a fully accessible kitchen with rise/fall counter.

Some tasks might involve physical outdoor work. However, we’re interested in finding the right tasks for you, and would like to support your involvement in whichever way is possible.

- Wysing working hours are 9.30am-5.30pm Monday to Friday
