Summary

Volunteer Treasurer sought to oversee charity finances, ensure good governance, attend 4–6 board meetings yearly, and support older Vietnamese residents.

Detailed description

An Lac House, established in 1997, provides sheltered housing for older Vietnamese people in Cambridge. As the only service of its kind in the UK, we offer a warm, culturally familiar environment where residents share a common language, food, and traditions. Our ten residents come from across Cambridgeshire and southern England, benefiting from 24-hour care, home-cooked Vietnamese meals, and wellbeing activities led by our dedicated, Vietnamese-speaking staff and volunteers.

We are seeking a volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and help guide the charity’s financial management and sustainability. Speaking Vietnamese is not a requirement — your financial acumen and experience are what matter most.

You will oversee finances; implement financial systems, such as Xero, ensure profit and loss accounts are reported monthly; support the Chair with the annual report to the Charity Commission; ensure good financial governance; and help the Board make sound decisions that enable our residents to thrive. We welcome applicants with financial or accountancy experience, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to community values.

This role will suit someone who can commit time to a worthwhile charity. We are also undergoing a period of transition, with ambitions to grow.

This rewarding voluntary role involves attending 4–6 Board meetings per year, with reasonable expenses reimbursed. It is an excellent opportunity to use your expertise to make a real difference to the lives of older Vietnamese people.

The rules of the Charity Commission govern us, we are members of Abbeyfield England, we have a contract with the Cambridgeshire County Council and housing benefit from Cambridge City. The property is owned by Cambridge Housing Society, a registered housing provider.

Most Board meetings are held online, but the ability to travel to An Lac House on Coldhams Lane in Cambridge for occasional meetings, or to work with the House Manager or the people we support, would be beneficial.

About Abbeyfield An Lac Community CIO

An Lac House was built in 1997 to provide supported housing for older Vietnamese residents. It is the only service in the UK that focuses on the Vietnamese community, and our 10 residents come not just from Cambridgeshire but also from other areas in the south of England. Many of the residents would struggle to fit in at a more conventional care home, but at An Lac House they feel part of a community, and are surrounded by culturally familiar language, food and customs, and live with people with similar backgrounds and experience.
An Lac House has a small and dedicated staff of four, who are all Vietnamese speakers. These include chefs who prepare two home-cooked meals a day in Vietnamese cuisine. Our staff provide 24-hour support to residents, ensuring that they are safe, healthy and happy. We offer a variety of activities for health, well-being and enjoyment, as well as opportunities to socialise with volunteers and the local community.
An Lac House is also a cultural and social centre for the local Vietnamese community and hosts religious festivals, cultural and community events, meditation groups, exercise sessions, and a drop-in day centre. As the circumstances of the Vietnamese community in the UK evolves, we are making plans to offer the services that the new generation require. We are looking for additional Trustees to help us achieve this vision.
